I have listed a few books and authors which would engross a child in the age group of 7 to 12 years. Many of the classics mentioned below will have an unabridged version, but it will be good to purchase the children’s version for your kids.
1. Enid Blyton
Enid Blyton has authored and co-authored a variety of books primarily for kids. These books have influenced generations of children. Like all children’s book, they have child protagonists encountering various adventures. Two of the series which I have read are mentioned below. However there are many more books like The Secret Seven, St. Clare’s etc.
- The Famous Five – This series needs no introduction. The four kids and their faithful dog Timmy (Timothy) have always tickled the imaginations of children all over.
- Malory Towers – The plot of the book revolves around the adventures in the school life of Darell Rivers at a girl’s boarding school. The series follows Darell from her difficult first year till the end of her school life.
2. The Curious Incident Of The Dog At A Night Time by Mark Haddon
This is the story of a 15-year old boy named Christopher Boone who has Asperger’s syndrome. His life is turned upside down following the death of his neighbour’s dog, which he takes upon himself to investigate.
3. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
This series features the misfortunes that befall the Baudelaire kids after their parent’s death. Each book describes their escape from the hands of Uncle Olaf, their murderous guardian, who is after their parent’s wealth.
4. Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis
The story is set in the fantasy world of Narnia filled with talking animals and magical beasts. Children from the real world are transported to Narnia to fight against the evil forces and to restore the land to its original rulers.
5. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
The book describes the life of a horse named Black Beauty from his childhood till retirement. It recounts stories of hardships and kindness experienced by Black Beauty throughout his life.
6. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
The story of a girl named Alice after she falls through a rabbit hole and encounters a whole different world populated by peculiar creatures.
7. Jules Verne
He was a famous French writer who popularised science fiction through his adventure novels.
- Journey to the Centre of the earth
The adventures of a German professor and his nephew after they descent a volcano from Iceland and come out through an active volcano in Italy. They encounter various dangers including prehistoric animals and giant mushrooms in their journey.
- Around the World in 80 Days
Phileas Fogg tries to travel around the world with his valet for a wager set by his friends at the Reform club.
8. R.L. Stevenson
A novelist and travel writer who has written great novels. Apart from the below novels, the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde can also be read by kids.
Kidnapped tells the story of David Balfour, a young man of the Lowlands in the southern part of Scotland. After the death of his parents, David travels to Shaws to meet his uncle Ebenezer. Hostile to David from the very beginning, Ebenezer sells him to the captain of a ship. The rest of the story follows David’s struggles and adventures after escaping from the ship with Alan.
- Treasure Island
The novel tells the story of young Jim Hawkins who gets a treasure map from an old sailor. The local physician and the district squire hatches up a plan to bring back the treasure by buying a ship and assigning to Jim the job of a cabin boy. The book details the experiences which Jim has on this voyage including encounters with pirates, mutiny and shootout.
9. Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling
The novels chronicle the life of a young wizard, Harry, and his friends Hermoine Granger and Ronald Weasley. Each book deals with their fight against the evil wizard Lord Voldemort who wants to murder Harry and spread darkness in the world.
10. Nancy Drew Mystery Stories/ Nancy Drew Files by Carolyn Keene
The story of a teenage amateur sleuth who solves local crimes with the help of her two best friends. The stories have a good blend of mystery, adventure and teenage romance. The same author has also written the Hardy Boy Mysteries featuring Frank and Joe Hardy as the protagonists.
